We are committed to doing our part to continue the reforestation efforts so vital to our community and the world. Our goal to be at the forefront of replanting vast acres of Koa in Hawaii, ensuring that this beautiful wood can be a part of gracious Hawaiian homes for all future generations."
Plant a Wish
Plant a Wish—developed by husband and wife team Joseph Imhoff and Sara Tekula—is a public awareness campaign and documentary film project aiming to restore native habitats around America, while engaging communities and inspiring individuals to take an active role in the health of their environment. The two Maui filmmakers (and project founders) will become the first to plant native trees in each of the 50 states, learning the stories behind the trees, blogging about their daily experiences, and collecting footage for a feature-length documentary film. They do all of this to fulfill their biggest wish: for future generations to enjoy healthy communities with an abundance of biodiversity, native plants and trees, fresh air, and clean water. The Plant a Wish Tour—which began on May 31, 2010 in Madison, Wisconsin—will be planting and filming in the Mid-West and Northeastern US through June. Hawaiian Legacy Hardwoods is offsetting the carbon footprint of the first leg of the Plant a Wish Tour by planting 50 native koa trees as part of our sustainable forestry project. In addition, Hawaiian Legacy Hardwoods is offering a matching program to help further offset Plant a Wish's three future tours. Tree lovers can purchase a koa Legacy Tree to dedicate as a living legacy—to commemorate an event, honor an individual or memorialize a loved one—for only $75. For every koa Legacy Tree purchased through Plant a Wish, a portion of the proceeds will directly benefit the Plant a Wish Project and a second koa Legacy Tree will be planted by Hawaiian Legacy Hardwoods.
"We are thrilled to partner with Hawaiian Legacy Hardwoods," says Sara Tekula, Plant a Wish Project Director. "I had the pleasure of visiting the project site on the Big Island and am in awe of the work they are doing and the boundless potential of their project. Their support of Plant a Wish will add fuel to our creative fire as film makers, and will give our tour project a nice boost."
Hagadone Printing
We believe that companies can be profitable and environmentally responsible–even in the printing industry. In 1994, long before sustainability became popular, Hagadone’s Former President, Erwin Hudelist, received the "Investing in the Environment" award from the State of Hawaii. Since then, we have established a solid environmental record.
Years ago we eliminated harmful chemicals and toxic materials from the printing process. Silver run-off, benzene and isopropyl alcohol are no longer used. Direct-to-plate printing has virtually eliminated film-based printing. And our Liberty brand inks are formulated so they produce no volatile organic compounds that pollute the air.
Conserving energy has also been a priority. In 2003 we made improvements to our building’s electrical system that recovers "drainage" energy. And two years later we replaced all our old light fixtures with energy-saving T5 and T8 fluorescent lights. More recently, we replaced all of our office incandescent light bulbs with CFL's (Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs).
At the end of 2005 we invested $11 million in a state-of-the-art web press and infrastructure improvements. The new press, which runs on natural gas, uses half the energy of our old web and has an eco-cool oven that recycles ink solvents, resulting in zero emissions.
This year we purchased an industrial shredder/baler system that will help us recycle 140 tons of waste paper per month, plus what we collect from you. Our PaperBack Program allows customers to return the extras of print jobs to us for recycling. At places where our delivery drivers make regular stops we’ll even pick up the paper. For those of you who visit us, we will have a convenient drop off area for your extras.
