founded in 1989. It was founded to encourage sustainable forestry
practices and promote stewardship of the forestry resource in Hawaii.
It has such diverse members as foresters, woodworkers, landowners, environmentalists,
and ecotourism operators. Through its annual juried woodworking exhibition
it recognizes excellence in wood artistry.

The University of Hawaii’s Forestry Extension Service is an invaluable
resource to anyone with an interest in the health and future of Hawaii’s
forests. They provide outreach services, education and detailed research
into all issues facing the forestry industry.

The U.S. Forest Service recognizes the importance of stewardship in managing
the forest resource on a national level.= The Forest Service balances
the use of the forest as a source for timber with its recreational value
and importance as the very lungs of the planet.= Preservation of
this resource for future generations is its primary mission.

Bishop Museum has made a name for itself both as a repository of all things
Hawaiian and as an independent research institution. Their research into
the geology, biology and culture of the Pacific is second to none.

The Polynesian Voyaging Society has recreated the sailing tradition of
the early Polynesian explorers and settlers. Their work has saved a valuable
body of knowledge from extinction that previously existed only in the
stories passed from generation to generation.

The U.S. Geological Survey keeps extensive records into the physical environment
of the Hawaiian Islands. This authoritative account allows very selective
land use decisions based on historical fact.
International Tropical Timber Organization — www.itto.or.jp/live/index.jsp
The ITTO was founded under the auspices of the United Nations in 1986.
They track the markets and condition or the world’s tropical timber resource.
Foster Botanical Gardens — www.honolulu.gov/parks/hbg/fbg.htm
Foster Botanical Gardens in the heart of Honolulu has a superb collection
of tropical trees from around the world. Their efforts have preserved
much of this genetic legacy.
